In August, a group of seven volunteers, including citizens from the US, England, Canada and Argentina, travelled to Salta for HPHA’s first ever brigade in this northern province. This brigade was launched as a part of the partnership between HPHA and ProMujer in Argentina (PMA), the national arm of an international microcredit organization that offers loans to women in impoverished communities.
During the weeklong brigade, they helped a total of six families in the neighborhoods of Solidaridad, Francisco Solano and Libertad improve their homes. Half of these families receive credit from PMA,and the other had previously received technical assistance from HPHA. With the help of community, national and international volunteers and PMA employees, the families were able to achieve a great deal, installing floors, digging holes for waste management and foundations and painting walls. And of course, despite the hard work, there was also plenty of time for sharing meals (including empanadas!), stories and pictures. There was a lot of interaction between the brigade members and the families, which lent to a true sense of community during their time together in Salta.
The volunteers not only assisted the six families in Salta, but also helped in other areas of the community. Partnering with a women’s cooperative that works to fight violence in the home, the brigade assisted in the construction of a daycare center for children in crisis. The 6 volunteers put up walls and evened the land level of the plot with great enthusiasm, despite the scorching 35° C temperatures.
The HPHA presence in Salta was still greater than one construction brigade. A separate team of volunteers travelled north to advise on housing improvements and give training workshop on topics related to human and community development. Made up of practicing professionals and architecture students, the group of nearly fifty volunteers worked with about thirty families In addition to providing their expertise, these volunteers also built hope, showing how powerful faith in action can be!
