With a concerted effort on behalf of HPHA staff and Project Leader, Victoria Beidermann, HPHA’s Project in Financial Education reached a year-end on 17 March. With the help of many volunteers and connections with other active NGO’s in Buenos Aires, we surpassed our goals, capacitating a total of 555 families living in various localities in the province of Buenos Aires. The Project aims to empower the communities in which we work by educating and accompanying them in the planning and management of their home finances; through the development of a budget, the analysis and control of expenses, a savings plans, and information on the risks and advantages of taking out a loan. Individual and community development is integral to HPHA’s methodology, which we implement through training in financial and legal literacy and educational ‘Habitat Tent’ events open to the whole community. We consider this an essential component of our projects as most of our families live in an informal economy and their income is not only very low, it is irregular. Through our training we teach families to organize their domestic finances so that they are able to save money to improve their housing conditions.
